Our Story

The Beginning of Brasstown Beef

Brasstown Beef was born from positive feedback. In 1998, we made the decision to take our family farm, Ridgefield Farm, from a commercial cattle operation of mixed breeds to a seed stock cattle operation, carefully breeding and selecting bulls of the highest quality for sale and use in other commercial cattle operations. After a great deal of research and scrutiny, it was clear that two breeds were perfect to accomplish our goal of producing the most efficient and productive cattle and providing the best-tasting beef.

Selected for quality. Raised for flavor.

Braunvieh–Angus Beef, Selected for Exceptional Eating Quality

Braunvieh, a Swiss breed, and Angus, originally a Scottish breed, offered the broadest range of positive traits of all beef breed combinations.

We implemented the strictest standards in our breeding program to ensure that only the best of the best were added to our breeding herds or sold to other farms and ranches. The animals that did not meet our stringent requirements were eaten by our family and friends.

When positive responses and requests for more meat came pouring in, it was obvious that the difference in our carefully selected, pasture-raised cattle, raised without any growth-promoting hormones or antibiotics, created an amazing flavor and tenderness when compared to beef generally available in the marketplace.

We Believe That Extraordinary Care = Extraordinary Beef.

We decided to start Brasstown Beef in an effort to find a financial path to keep the farm in the family for future generations. And the way to do that was to focus on becoming a breeder and supplier of the best cattle and the best beef in the business. If we could provide the highest quality beef to people who truly care about knowing where their meat comes from, how it has been raised, and appreciate consistently excellent tasting beef; that was the path to help us achieve our long-run goal.

Growing the Family of Farms

We originally started with all cattle for Brasstown being raised on our farm located in Brasstown, NC. We bred, raised, and sold bulls to other farmers to help them improve the quality of their cattle. Then we would purchase those calves and grow them out on our farm. As our program has grown, we developed additional relationships with other families that use the genetics that we either provided or insist on, or that meet our requirements and raise their cattle as we do.

This has provided us the opportunity to increase our supply chain and continue growing with additional families, with the shared goal of finding a financial path to allow them to keep their farms in the family for future generations.
